  • Blocking—repair rug shape distortions
  • Odor removal—effectively remove smoke, pet urine, or animal odors
  • Fire damage—remove soot and smoke from the rug
  • Fringe repairs—fix or add new fringe
  • Side repairs
  • Repair splits and tears

Our Careful Process

We are very careful in how we clean and care for our client's Oriental rugs. Here are the typical steps we take when cleaning a rug in our rug-cleaning studio:

  1. Identify all types of fibers in the rug, the rug structure, and the dominant soil type.
  2. Check for the presence of tea wash and spots, and perform a dye bleed test.
  3. Remove dry soil by harmonic vibration (gentle and effective), then vacuum both sides of the rug.
Oriental Rug Cleaners: Gentle harmonic vibrations remove dirt from rug

  4. Remove the difficult spots (e.g. urine, wine, and coffee).
Oriental Rug Cleaners: Spot cleaning by hand
  5. Lock or set dyes.
  6. Select a cleaning method (see below) by matching the requirements of the fiber type, rug dyes used, and rug structure—and then wash the rug.
  7. Thoroughly rinse and remove excess moisture.
  8. Set the nap of the rug.
  9. Dry in a temperature-controlled and dehumidified room.
  10. Clean the rug fringe when the rug is more than 80% dry. We take special care to preserve the fringe tea wash.
  11. Dry the rug and fringe in a temperature-controlled and dehumidified room.

  12. When the rug is totally dry (tested with a moisture meter), vacuum the rug once more.
  13. Apply protective coating, moth repellant, and other after-cleaning solutions requested by the client.
  14. Wrap, pack—and for short or long-term storage—seal the rug in a waterproof, tear-proof, and breathable Tyvek wrap.

Rug Care Tips

Here are some rug-care tips we suggest to our clients:

  • Vacuum Frequency: We recommend vacuuming 2 to 4+ times per month (4+ times is great, 2 is fine).
  • Cleaning Frequency: Always use a professional experienced in cleaning the type of rug you have. For high traffic areas, we recommend cleaning every 8 to 12 months. For low traffic areas, we recommend cleaning every 12 to 24 months.
